Four objects in your home live out of sight. The microwave behind a cabinet door. The remote somewhere in the sofa. The server in a closet. The keyboard in a drawer. I designed all four to be left out instead.

Hiding an object is a design failure, and it costs something. You stop maintaining what you can’t see. You lose what has no place to sit. You tolerate worse interaction because nobody is watching — which is how a microwave ends up with twenty-two buttons and three worn ones. Designing for visibility turns out to be a constraint rather than a finish: an object that has to be seen has to be honest inside, legible to operate, and worth keeping. These four aren’t a matched set. What they share is the reasoning, not the finish.

Microwave interfaces are the textbook case of feature creep: twenty-two buttons, three of them worn. And the part that kills the appliance isn't the magnetron, it's the keypad, which delaminates and takes a working machine to landfill with a decade left in it. This one has a dial, two buttons, no clock and no membrane. The dial is an encoder driving electronic timing rather than a wind-down spring — mechanical feel, electronic precision, nothing on screen. Fewer failure modes, and operable without reading anything, which matters for anyone with low vision or arthritis. Cheap microwaves already have dials; theirs are dials because dials are cheap. This one is a dial because it's better.

This is where your photographs live, and it sits in a closet. You don't think about it once until a drive fails and you find out what was on it. So: a window over the drive bay, an activity light readable across a room, a drive swap you can do by hand, and a tripod — because a thing on a tripod is furniture and a thing in a closet is equipment. You maintain what you can see. Making the machine's state visible is a maintenance feature, not a decorative one. The failure mode for a hidden server isn't that it looks bad, it's that nobody notices it's dying.

Every one of these lost a feature it would otherwise have had, and gained a way to be opened. That's the trade the premise forces, and after four objects I'd make it again.
